Ready Player One Movie Review

From the creator of masterpieces Jaws and Jurassic Park (for starters) comes Ready Player One. But just like those two classics, this movie is based on a bestselling novel. So what happens when the ingenious geeky minds of Spielberg and Ernest Cline collide?

In the not-too-distant future, economy is on the verge of collapse. To escape, people spend their days in a vast virtual landscape known as the OASIS. But when young player Wade Watts becomes the first to find one of three clues left behind by the late creator, all of which will see the winner inherit ownership of the entire game, rival tech company IOI intervenes.

To say this ranks among Spielberg’s best would be a lie. But to deny that it’s revolutionary filmmaking would be just as untrue. Not unlike James Cameron’s sci-fi mega-hit Avatar, Ready Player One whisks the audiences into a breath-taking computerised universe, all the while seamlessly switching between real actors and their motion-capture counterparts.

But the film doesn’t just celebrate the last thirty-plus years of pop culture in style with a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it orgy of characters and references - it’s Spielbergian-filmmaking at its finest. And while it’s unlikely to garner the same praise as his other classics in the coming years, like those films it’s a wonder to behold nonetheless.
