Film Reviews: Skyscraper, Tag, The First Purge & Hereditary

Here are some mini movie reviews. Yes, they're a little late, but to quote one of my all-time favourites Ghostbusters, "better late than never"!

Skyscraper

The iconic ladder matches are crazier than I remember

Yes, Duane “The Rock” Johnson delivers yet another action movie. This time he’s climbing – hands-free, of course – up the tallest and most state-of-the-art tower in the world to save his family from terrorists. The building is also a towering inferno, thus quadrupling the obstacles our hero already faces. Fans of Die Hard will rejoice in this hugely-entertaining actioner, even if it is as derivative of such films as it is teeming with clichés from start to finish, or from the bottom up, rather. Expect sweaty palms as you watch the 21st century’s answer to Arnie scale sky-high ledges and clear open spaces between cranes and burning window ledges. Skyscraper might not be a soaring addition to Johnson’s huge resume, but it’s thrilling enough to keep your attention from hitting rock-bottom.

Tag

They're "it"

For a film that’s about nothing more than a group of forty-something friends who have spent the last 30 years playing tag, it’s hard to decide whether its plot is paper-thin or one that’s as genius as that of comedy gems like Step Brothers or The Hangover. At least that’s what you’ll probably think before watching the film, because director Jeff Tosmic turns in a comedy that’s one of the most laugh-out-loud in recent years – which is no easy feat. Perhaps this is helped by the fact that the film is, rather impressively, based on a true story (yes – you read that right), which doesn’t just bring with it an element of inspiration, but also a meaningful message about how, for the most part, friends otherwise naturally drift apart. The result is a film that’s as fun as it is fascinating, and proves that, like friendships, a great game shouldn’t end.

The First Purge

A franchise out of ammo

First of all, allow me to apologise on behalf of the filmmakers: this isn’t the “first” Purge movie – it’s “The First Purge”, which translates as the fourth one. Sadly, though, it doesn’t really matter, as the franchise has finally run out of blood. Of course, this didn’t have to happen, had the studio decided to continue with the compelling arc set up by Anarchy and Election Year. But with the latter’s underwhelming box office performance, it seemed that a prequel was the logical next step. On paper, an origin story sounds intriguing, but onscreen it’s nothing short of a gangster movie that cheapens what has thus far been a promising series. For something a little more frightening, just tune into CNN and keep up to date on all things Trump. As for this film, wait for it to land on Netflix where it belongs, right next to Power.

Hereditary

Yes, I saw the ending, too, Toni

Ari Aster’s Hereditary is as weird as they come. Some might say it’s this year’s answer to 2017’s super-pretentious and vomit-inducing mother! - but it’s not that weird. But, much like mother!, it is, up until the third act at least, a hugely-compelling psychological horror, with Toni Collette delivering an award-winning performance. However, as the film draws towards its climax, it dives nose-first into a territory that’s far less psychological and all too literal - like mother!. That doesn’t make any of its disturbing images any less nightmarish, though, and perhaps it’s a film that will garner a cult following over time – as many horrors do. But if you’d rather be left shitting the bed (figuratively speaking, of course) than scratching your head, it might be best to avoid this one.

  1. The Purge series was in 5 years and we are going to see the fourth Purge movie in 5 years. Also, this time, let's go to the beginning of the social ritual of "cleaning" 12 hours to see how this night of purity was born. James DeMonaco, who is both director and screenwriter of the three previous films in the series, has decided to leave the presidency to Gerard McMurray, while James DeMonaco continues writing the script of the First Purge. Which I think has made the right decision. In fact, McMurray, who implemented the first purge, directed the first dose of action from the three previous films, demonstrating the accuracy of this decision and adding fresh blood to the series. This is the situation, but how does James DeMonaco define us? Full HD The First Purge Backgrounds

In advance, the Night of the First Purge has significant conclusions and dispositions, such as the most political and unambiguous. Looking at the American pressure on the Trump era and the pressure of this moment on the state of a minority (we can say that all are outside the white population). Even Staten Island, the subject of the film, is a metaphor in itself. In addition, not only in the name of the American film, the impact of Turkey on its internal politics can be clearly established. But before that, the first night of purification has the opportunity to become a B-movie with the ability to contract with its clichés and dialogues, despite its political reality and the fact that it deals in an important and significant way the current problems.
