When Universal Pictures very
prematurely announced that The Mummy would be the first in
their cinematic universe named, ahem, Dark Universe, my eyes – like many
others’ – rolled. I’ve nothing against shared cinematic universes. Hell, I’m
all for it. Look at the incredible job the MCU has done, with the DCEU being
taught lessons by Wonder Woman and her lasso, and even this year’s Kong:
Skull Island breathing some much-needed fire into Warner Bros. and
Legendary's new monster franchise. But those guys? The
Wolfman, Swamp Thing, Frankenstein, Dracula et al? Really? But if
the filmmakers really think it’s going to work – and they surely do given such
an early promise of a shared universe, and it’s got Tom Cruise
- I’ll make the effort to go watch this new reiteration of The
Mummy even if it does seem overly action-focused and starring a very
out of place Tom Cruise, and see what it is they've done. And that’s just what
I did.
Curious about something in particular..?

With Cinema Suffocated By The Likes Of Marvel And DC, The Power Rangers Reboot Makes Its Superhero-Landing At The Right Morphin’ Time
A breakfast club you certainly won't forget about...
There seems to
be such a pattern forming with films being targeted with controversy, doubt, hate
and scrutiny, that you can almost expect these things to now form part of the
promotional material and marketing strategy for most franchise films. But it
probably doesn’t help when a film’s advertising is conducted mostly through its
merchandise counterparts. And in the case of Power Rangers 2017, it was the toys.

Move Over MCU And DC - The Real Titans Are Coming...
Did you know you Skull Island on
Google Maps? Okay, that's only half true. Skull Island is nothing more than the
fictional setting for the infamous King Kong movies - but it
really is on there, courtesy of Google's sense of humour, of course. That said
though, parts of the new film Kong: Skull Island were shot in
Bangkok and Hawaii - real locations that I'll be visiting on my upcoming
round-the-world trip (aka "Greedy Honeymoon"). But for now, let's
look at the film itself.

Ghostbusters 2016 review
I won’t lie and say I’ve been a Ghostbusters fan since the
original movie came out in 1984, being the same age and all - give or take a
month or two. But amongst my vast – and ever-growing – Ghostbusters merchandise
collection, there are only remnants of the toys I possessed as a child. As is
usually the case, things disappear over the years. That, or your mother takes
them to a car boot sale once you’re considered ‘too old’ to play with toys. So
perhaps over the last few years I’ve been subconsciously trying to make up for
this by collecting almost every piece of Ghostbusters merchandise under the
sun. I certainly haven’t been to any car boots in the hope that some of my old
toys are still circulating though… No, that wasn’t me.
