Well, what an
adventure… Sure, me and Sian didn’t undertake most of the activities including
kayaking and surfing (although I did jump out of a plane), but we’re more than
happy enough being somewhere we’ve never been before and soaking up the scenery
on offer. And it’s almost an understatement to say that New Zealand has a lot. It’s not just the adventure capital
of the world - it’s probably the most beautiful country too. Its stunning,
breathtaking and otherworldly landscape certainly raises the bar on epic, and,
to once again quote our chief experience officer Mark – whom I’m now thrilled
to call a friend – “it’s Ireland on
steroids.” There’s simply no other way to sum up this country.
It’s also one
of the most relaxed countries I’ve ever visited. In fact, forget what I said
about Bangkok being particularly friendly. Here in New Zealand, people aren’t
just happy – they’re very chilled out and approachable.
Our return to Wellington for our final night may not have involved any excursions or
exploring, but it did involve a fantastic and crazy night in the hostel bar
with the entire tour group. Sian and I enjoyed a night of drinks and dancing
(including some hilarious Coyote Ugly-esque
dancing on the table-top for yours truly and a few others…) with some great
people. Sadly, we had to say goodbye. And while it’s highly likely, given our
geographical locations, that we won’t see most of those from the group again,
we made some long-lasting memories together while exploring one of the most
incredible countries in the world.
On exiting
Wellington for Auckland, we were also reminded that New Zealand really is
Middle-Earth, as Smaug and two Giant Eagles – one of which is sporting Gandalf
the Grey on its back – rule the airport! Outside, the airport also boasts, “Middle of Middle-Earth.”
Nice touch,
Wellington. Nice, touch.
We’re now
resting in an airport hotel in Auckland, ready for chapter three which begins
tomorrow, and thankfully it’s not the Grey Havens…
